MLB confirms: 2024 ‘Field of Dreams’ game is coming to Rickwood Field in Birmingham

It’s confirmed. Major League Baseball is coming to Birmingham.

The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will play at historic Rickwood Field in the Field of Dreams game on June 20, 2024, MLB announced Tuesday morning.

Rickwood is the oldest baseball park in America, and was once the home field for a young Willie Mays when he performed with the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro Leagues.

“We are proud to bring Major League Baseball to historic Rickwood Field in 2024,” said Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. “This opportunity to pay tribute to the Negro Leagues as the Giants and Cardinals play a regular season game at this iconic location is a great honor. The legacy of the Negro Leagues and its greatest living player, Willie Mays, is one of excellence and perseverance. We look forward to sharing the stories of the Negro Leagues throughout this event next year.”

“I’m over the moon,” said Gerald Watkins, chairman of the Friends of Rickwood. “I started working on this in the early months of 2021. It took a while to get some traction but once I found the right people at MLB, things started rolling. It’s tremendous. tremendous for Birmingham—tremendous for Rickwood Field, the oldest baseball park in the country honoring Willie Mays and the Negro Leagues.”
“Preserving the legacy of the Negro Leagues is vital to growing baseball’s diversity and popularity,” said MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark. “Willie Mays, like so many other Negro Leaguers, broke down barriers and paved the way for those of us who dreamt of playing baseball at the highest level. This event helps to link the past, present and future and helps further the cause of attracting a new generation of players to our game.’’
Last week the Birmingham City Council approved a contract with Trawick Contractors, a Birmingham-based, women-owned construction firm. for $553,447 to renovate Rickwood.
